MONU #39
MONU #39 - Singles Urbanism: The contemporary city is basically a bad boyfriend: expensive, emotionally inconsistent, and somehow still the centre of your life, argues Liza Goncharenko. But while cities increasingly accommodate people living alone, housing and urban space continue to be shaped around the couple and the family. MONU #39, “Singles Urbanism”, asks what happens when we take single life seriously as an urban condition rather than treating it as a temporary state. The issue explores how housing, public space, intimacy and social life are changing as households become smaller. Contributions range from Droog’s fictional “S1ngletown” and Michael Wolf’s voyeuristic “The Transparent City” to Ariadne Schmidt’s historical account of singles in European cities and Satoko Shinohara’s examination of Tokyo’s one-room apartments. Richard Ronald, Sabri Bendimérad and others discuss the future of housing, while Eliott Moreau considers the temporal rhythms through which singles negotiate public space. “Singles Urbanism” does not celebrate or lament living alone. It asks how cities can adapt to it.
